What Is the Permesso di Soggiorno?

The Permesso di Soggiorno is the official Italian residence permit required for all non-EU citizens staying in Italy for more than 90 days. It certifies your legal right to live, work, study, or join family in Italy.

Overview of the Application Process

  1. Within 8 Days of Arrival: Pick up the “kit” at a designated Ufficio Postale (post office) – look for the “Sportello Amico” kiosk.
  2. Complete the Kit: Fill out the forms and attach required documents (see table below).
  3. Submit at the Post Office: Hand in the kit, pay fees, and receive a stamped receipt with your appointment date at the local Questura.
  4. Biometric Appointment: Attend your appointment at the Questura (police headquarters) to provide fingerprints and photograph.
  5. Permit Delivery: When ready (usually 30–60 days later), collect your Permesso at the Questura or authorized post office location.
